Pathways provides DOT (Department of Transportation) SAP assessments, substance abuse evaluations and counseling through our Waverly location. The Pathways' certified counselor who is responsible for overseeing this process is a Substance Abuse Professional, or SAP. DOT Requires a SAP to have specific credentials, to have basic knowledge in specific areas, to successfully complete comprehensive SAP training and to satisfactorily complete the SAP exam.
The SAP services Pathways provides are specifically for individuals who have violated DOT drug and alcohol rules and are prohibited from performing any DOT safety-sensitive function until successfully completing the SAP return-to-duty process.
Pathways' treatment begins with an assessment/evaluation. A certified counselor evaluates each client. During the evaluation, the counselor gathers information from the client and uses standardized tools to help determine which level of care and types of services would be appropriate for the client. Based on the client's individual needs, the counselor makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
We understand that safety-sensitive employees in the transportation industry are subject to federal drug and alcohol use and testing regulations, under the federal Department of Transportation (DOT). An individual who violates these regulations must be immediately removed from safety-sensitive functions, and he/she may not be returned to any safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry until and unless he/she successfully completes a DOT return-to-duty process. These processes are required and documented via the DOT drug and alcohol rules:
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)- 49 CFR Part 382
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) - 49 CFR Part 219
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - 14 CFR Part 121
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) - 49 CFR Part 655
The US Coast Guard (USCG) - 46 CFR Parts 4, 5, and 16
Drug and alcohol testing (including SAP) procedures are 49 CFR Part 40.
